Through its outreach programme, The JoyJ Initiative brings volunteers together to provide practical support and connect directly with people experiencing homelessness in New York City.
JoyJ’s outreach began at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament on the Upper West Side, where a small group of volunteers came together to distribute essential food and clothing items to people in the surrounding community. Today, that commitment continues through outreach efforts supporting communities across New York City.
Supporting People Through Direct Outreach
JoyJ’s approach is centred on direct community engagement. Rather than simply providing resources from a distance, volunteers come together and personally distribute essential items to people who may be experiencing difficult circumstances.
These outreach efforts help provide practical necessities while also creating opportunities for genuine human connection. A simple conversation, a meal, or a bag containing essential items can communicate something equally important: that someone is seen, valued and not forgotten.
Continuing JoyJ’s Work in New York City
The JoyJ Initiative has been carrying out this work for more than 14 years. According to JoyJ, its outreach efforts have helped more than 116,000 people in New York and beyond.
The organisation continues to support outreach in communities including the Upper West Side and Harlem, bringing volunteers together to help provide essential food, clothing and other necessities.
