When a School Reopens, Hope Returns: JoyJ’s Continued Outreach in Haiti

Supporting Children, Teachers and Education in Communities Facing Hardship

For children, a school is more than a place to study.

It is a place where they learn, build friendships, develop confidence and begin imagining what their future might look like. For teachers, it is a place where they dedicate their time and knowledge to helping those children grow.

When a school is forced to close because a community lacks the resources needed to keep it operating, the consequences can extend far beyond the classroom.

That is why JoyJ’s recent outreach in Haiti was so meaningful.

Through the support of the JoyJ community, a school in an impoverished community was able to reopen, while 16 teachers received payments that allowed them to continue their work. The children also shared a heartfelt message of appreciation with the wider JoyJ community.

The story is a powerful example of how community support can help protect access to education while strengthening the people who make that education possible.

Returning to Haiti With a Commitment to Help

JoyJ volunteer Arleine returned to Haiti as part of the organization’s continuing efforts to support communities facing significant hardship.

Her visit represents an important part of the JoyJ approach: connecting people who want to help with communities that need practical support.

JoyJ’s outreach model is built around direct engagement. Rather than focusing solely on financial contributions, the organization creates opportunities for volunteers to participate in projects and connect directly with people and communities experiencing hardship.

This approach has been part of JoyJ’s work since its beginnings. The organization was founded in 2013 after volunteers distributed 12 Comfort Bags at a Catholic parish on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and was incorporated as a public charity in 2014.

Today, that same principle of showing up and helping directly extends to communities far beyond New York.

Helping a School Open Its Doors Again

One of the most significant outcomes of this outreach was the reopening of a school.

For the children who attend it, that means the opportunity to return to a classroom and continue learning.

For the teachers, it means being able to continue the work they have committed themselves to doing.

Through JoyJ’s support, 16 teachers received payments to continue their work, helping make it possible for the school to reopen and continue serving its students.

This illustrates an important dimension of community support: sometimes helping children means supporting the people and institutions around them as well.

Teachers are central to education. They provide instruction, encouragement, structure and guidance. When teachers are able to remain in the classroom, children gain continuity in their education.

The impact can therefore reach much further than the initial assistance.

Education Is an Investment in a Community

Education can create opportunities that extend well beyond childhood.

A functioning school provides children with a consistent environment for learning and development. It also creates a space where teachers, families and communities can come together around the future of the next generation.

In communities experiencing poverty and limited resources, maintaining access to education can be especially important.

That is why reopening a school represents more than reopening a building.

It represents the continuation of learning.

It represents teachers being able to continue serving their students.

And it represents children having another opportunity to learn, grow and imagine possibilities for their future.

A Previous Chapter of JoyJ’s Work in Haiti

This outreach builds upon JoyJ’s previous work with children and schools in Haiti.

In an earlier Haiti outreach, JoyJ volunteers brought fresh fruit, clean drinking water and other essential items to children in schools. The initiative was designed not only to address immediate needs but also to provide encouragement and human connection.

That earlier experience highlighted the important role schools can play within communities.

Schools are places of education, but they can also become points of connection where practical assistance reaches children and families.

The more recent effort adds another dimension to that work by helping a school reopen and enabling teachers to continue their roles.

Together, these efforts demonstrate a continuing commitment to supporting children through practical, community-based action.

The Children Had a Message for JoyJ

Perhaps the most meaningful part of this story came from the children themselves.

After receiving support that helped their school reopen, the children sent a heartfelt thank-you message to the JoyJ community.

Their message provides a personal connection between the people who supported the outreach and the children whose lives were affected by it.

For the JoyJ community, it is a reminder that support can travel much further than the moment in which it is given.

A contribution can help keep a school operating.

A school can keep teachers working.

Teachers can continue educating children.

And those children can carry their education forward into the future.

The Importance of Supporting Teachers

When conversations about helping children focus exclusively on supplies or infrastructure, an important part of education can sometimes be overlooked: the teachers themselves.

A school cannot function without educators.

The 16 teachers supported through this outreach are an important part of the story because their continued work helps turn a reopened school into a functioning learning environment.

Supporting teachers means supporting the children they teach.

It also recognizes the value of local people who dedicate their time and expertise to their own communities.

JoyJ’s approach is based on working with local volunteers, organizations and institutions that understand the needs of the communities they serve. The organization’s organizer program specifically describes local volunteers as central to coordinating outreach activities with local communities and institutions.

From One Outreach to a Larger Community

JoyJ’s work is built around the belief that meaningful change can begin with ordinary people choosing to take action.

Its current website reports outreach activity across 21 countries, with 43 partners, 12,000 volunteers, 116,000 lives touched and 830,000 essential gifts.

The Haiti outreach is one part of that broader international community.

What makes each project meaningful is its connection to a specific community and its specific needs.

In Haiti, that meant helping children return to school and supporting 16 teachers so they could continue their work.

In other communities, the needs may look different.

But the principle remains the same: listen to the community, understand what is needed and find practical ways to help.

Compassion Through Direct Action

JoyJ calls its approach “spontaneous philanthropy” — creating opportunities for individuals and groups to provide assistance through direct outreach.

The Haiti story reflects that philosophy.

Arleine returned to the community.

Support reached a school.

Teachers were able to continue working.

Children returned to learning.

And the children responded with gratitude.

It is a complete circle of community action: people choose to help, support reaches where it is needed, and the people who benefit become part of the story.

A Thank You That Belongs to Everyone

The children’s message of thanks was directed toward the JoyJ community, but the story belongs to everyone who helped make the outreach possible.

It belongs to the volunteers who give their time.

It belongs to the people who support JoyJ’s projects.

It belongs to local partners and community members.

And it belongs to the teachers and children who continue moving forward despite difficult circumstances.

Their gratitude is a reminder that meaningful change is rarely the result of one person acting alone.

It is created when people come together around a shared responsibility to help one another.

Continuing the Work in Haiti

JoyJ currently maintains a Haiti project supporting volunteers working with communities facing extreme hardship.

The organization’s previous Haiti outreach, combined with this more recent school initiative, shows how support can take different forms depending on what a community needs — from food and clean water to education and support for teachers.

For JoyJ, the goal is not simply to provide a one-time response.

It is to build relationships and create opportunities for people to participate directly in helping communities move forward.

When a School Reopens, the Story Continues

The reopening of this school is not the end of the story.

It is a beginning.

It gives children the opportunity to continue learning.

It gives teachers the opportunity to continue teaching.

And it gives a community another reason to look toward the future.

Arleine’s return to Haiti and the support provided through the JoyJ community demonstrate what can happen when people choose to turn compassion into action.

The children’s heartfelt thank-you is perhaps the simplest expression of the impact:

They were seen.
They were supported.
And they were given another opportunity to learn.

For JoyJ, that is what community outreach is about — showing up, listening, helping where help is needed, and building connections that can continue long after an outreach ends.

A school reopened. Sixteen teachers continued their work. And children returned to their classrooms with hope for what comes next.
